Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms on the Internet. The platform is designed to allow users to shore photos with others, plus it is absolutely free to use. Mike Krieger, a Brazilian software engineer, and Kevin Systrom, an American programmer, created Instagram, finally launching the platform in October 2010. Since then, the social media website has become very popular, especially among teenagers and ecommerce business owners. By 2012, the service gained a total of 100 million users that signed into their account on a daily or weekly basis. Of course, this was only the beginning and by December 2014, 200 million more users signed on to share their photos, with people all around the world.
Instagram eventually gained the attention of Mark Zuckerberg in 2012, at which time Systrom and Krieger was offered and accepted $1 billion dollars in stock and cash for the platform. From 2012 to 2013, Instagram grew by 23 percent, while the parent company, Facebook only grew by 3 percent.
When the Instagram was first launched in 2010, the photo sharing features were limited to a square-shaped photo. However, this did not deter users from partaking in the popular photo-sharing fun. Hashtags were added in 2011, making it easier for users to locate messages containing specific content and themes. In 2013, users were able to apply digitalized filters to their photos. This allowed users to alter their images to perfection. This didn’t change until August 2015, when the version 7.5 was released, this allowed users to upload images that is captured in any aspect ratio.
Instagram is continuously changing, enhancing the social media experience for all users. The platform’s timeline was altered to replicate that of Facebook, with a chronological view. The Instagram app has also undergone various alterations, since its release in 2012. On May 11, 2016, the app design received a more vivid pink logo and thinner icons. A Windows 10 version of the app was released on October 13, 2016, so users could access their accounts from their desktop computers.
Today, users can link their Instagram accounts to third-party social media platforms, including Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook and Flickr. To link your Instagram account to one of the social media platforms, just access the “Profile Tab” and “Edit Sharing Settings” feature, then select a network that you want to connect to. Every time you upload an image to your Instagram page, you will have the option of sharing it to the connected social platforms.
Adding media is extremely easy and only requires a few simple actions. Just click on the blue camera, which is located in the navigation panel. Instagram will automatically activate the user’s device camera, so they can select to snap an image or upload one that is saved on their smartphone.
